Mission 10 Miler

Hadn’t planned on doing this race until the last minute. Told the race director I was already running a race that day, and she said they had an afternoon start. Since I missed out on RnR USA, I thought why not. Proceeds go to the Rescue Mission, and they do good work in town for people who need help.

Took a little longer getting home from the District this morning than I had hoped, so I pretty much had time to change my shirt and shoes and head back out the door. Got to Grove Stadium with time to spare. Didn’t have to worry about getting loose, but I did need to finish digesting the late breakfast I had. Ugh, that about killed me today.

By race time the temps had climbed to near 70 degrees, not at all what anybody expected today. I was ready to run 10 miles, and that was really my plan, but I latched on to some guy about my age from the start and tried to keep pace with him. We ran together until about the 4 mile mark at a 7:45 pace, but those McDonald’s pancake sat right between the top of my stomach and the back of my throat the whole way. I put on my entry form an expected finish of 1:20, so all I wanted to do was get to the turnaround point in less than 40 minutes. Once I made that in 38:33, I fugured I could just coast on the way back and still beat my time.

The course was boring one, pretty much the last leg of the old Frederick Marathon along rural roads with nothing to look at. Being a small race, there was a fast lead pack, a slow trailing pack and smaller groups or individuals in between. That’s where I was.

The last three miles were pretty tough. The heat was starting to get to me, and I was still feeling like I was going to barf any minute. I wish I would have. I know I would have felt better. Got passed by two late but picked off two in the last half going over two overpasses leading back to the stadium. A decent finish on a tough, somewhat hilly course. Got lots of work to do before AmOd and the Frederick Half next month.

Scope It Out 5K

Third time running this one with my twin sister, who is a cancer survivor. Ran it last year with my niece, who I was sure would whip my butt (and most certainly could if she ever trained). Decided against a rematch and chose, instead, to run it as a group.

Weather was supposed to be nasty all day, but it actually turned out kinda nice. No rain. Overcast and a little cool. Perfect running weather.

No PRs to boast of today, but my sister did do her first 5K without any walk breaks. She kept the pace, and I looked at the watch and carried her water. She picked it up at the end and finished strong. Nice family event for a good cause.

Treadmill Run

Hoped to run RnR USA this weekend in DC, which is the old National Half, my first half. Usually the weather isn’t all that great this time of year, but we’ve been having weather more typical of late April/early May than mid-March. Race was sold out. Eh. Rainy and nasty, so I beat feet on the treadmill at the gym.

Rock n Roll St. Pete

Not sure why I blow the money to travel south for a mid-winter race/vacation ’cause I haven’t had very good luck with the weather the last two times down. At least there wasn’t sleet this time.

Morning started early. Hotel arranged for a shuttle to the start line. Glad I pestered the driver about pick up information. Of the 15 or so who rode thes shuttle over, I was the only one on it the way back, and there was a lot of ground between the hotel and the finish line.

Start was cold and windy outside Tropicana Field. The first few miles we a circuitous route surrounding the stadium. I think I passed it three times before heading toward the gulf. Not a very pretty course until we got toward the water, but it was sure nice after that. Went into the race with a goal of anything near 1:45. I figured, like most halfs, if I just try to run steady 8s the whole way I would make it.

By about the halfway point, I was pretty much over being cold. I was almost overdressed, so I flip up my beanie around the edges and pushed up my sleeves.

As much as the water was nice, the breeze was a bit stiffer. Running the mile away from the pier was nice with the wind at my back. Finished at the park and got changed into some dry clothes. What a contrast between the start and finish. Dark and dreary stadium district to palm trees and sunny skies at the end. Would love to have had my family there at the finish, but mama is just not that adventurous.

Waited around for the shuttle for way too long, but it sure beat the hell out of hoofing it back or paying a $40 fare to get home.
